Racist Indians protest racism against Shilpa Shetty in Big Brother

Shilpa Shetty's co-participants in 'Big Brother' are being accused of racism. According to NDTV, 2000 viewers have found it fit to complain to the U.K. media watchdog about the racist slurs used against Shilpa.

NDTV asked whether racism is a reality for Asians abroad and 95% of the viewers said 'Yes'. Is anyone surprised?

Perhaps the better question to ask would have been, is racism a reality in India? The unpalatable answer to that would be that ,as Indians, we are arguably the most racist people on earth. The Brits and Americans are angels compared to us. Look at how systematically upper castes discriminate against lower castes, or one religion discriminates against another, in our country. To look at how our entire lives are ordered around our caste, community, religion, state, even colour of skin, one just has to scan through the matrimonial ads in any newspaper!

Racism in India is not even limited to the uninformed and the less educated. It is as prevalent amongst our most erudite and educated. To give just one example, a famous prominent socialite fromMumbai, made a public comment in a news paper, that if the municipal ward where he stayed ( a elite city area) was reserved for SC/ST/BC candidates, there would an automatic erosion in representative standards- automatic!

So drop your outrage fellow Indians : ). Big Brother, above, is watching.

Well said. We certainly need to get off our high horse and fix things at home first.

At last a moderate and balanced view.

I see that NDTV are running a campaign to encourage viewers to call the relevant Production Companies and the UK Ombudsman, Ofcom.

Should Sky News, BBC24, run a campaign to lobby the Indian Government to immediately bring the thousands of years old caste system to a shuddering halt. Where would Shilpa get her "Man Friday's" then?

Man Friday, that's exactly how Shilpa described one of her many servants on Big Brother recently.

There is no denying the fact that Shilpa equals to nothing in Bollywood. This ageing chimp like person has always been in the periphery of the movie industry surviving by taking scraps of roles that proved abundant lack of talent, a pre-fabricated nose and monkey antics that bored the wits of those audiences who happen to watch her movies. She should accept the fact that that is dark, ugly and can’t speak English.
The way the Indian Government acted is nothing short of hilarious - in this country where malnutrition, starvation deaths, rapes, murders, collapse of judiciary is so common that many atrocities don’t even reach our years! In this country where the police have gone to dogs, where wildlife is compromised in the name of development, where massive scarcity of water and electricity make the life of many in the capital a living hell – we have the politicians and media playing with our emotions. In fact, those Brits should kill Shilpa for good. At least we will be exempted from looking at her sewer face! You stupid people there are many Indians in UK including IT engineers, Nurses and NRI’s – why are you making their life difficult for this bloody ape! I feel like smashing her nose with my shoe!

Discrimination is a universal bane. No matter how well the economy or how good the education system, every society has to fight this evil.

Thought u'd enjoy this one "being brown is being racist!" :)

Well said. I was an American Born Chinese who stayed in New Delhi for almost two years and would never ever go back. It's only a great place to be in if you look like a typical Indian, are a Brahmin, and a millionaire. If you are Chinese looking, come from a middle class background, or are a Christian, forget it, you will never get much respect.

how sad oh dear, I am sorry that you had to experience that in India (new delhi). But that doees not mean all Indian cities are alike

July 28, 2009 7:55 PM

I am sorry, are you telling me some Indian cities are not racist. They are most definitiely racist. They are worse. As someone said India is a good place if you are a Brahmin. If you are not a Brahmin be prepared to be treated like a sub-human at some point in life. In fact there are newspapaer ads in Madras (Chennai) which advertise apartments for rent "for Brahmins only". Can you imagine any other country in the world where you would see adds in a prominent paper saying this House is reserved for Whites only. The KKK would be proud. BTW, the paper is owned by Brahmins. Anyone who is familiar with Chennai knows which paper I am talking about.

I am British Citizen and I suffered racism in India. I was told I am forighn and probably would not do anything, even though I was leaving the country. I have seen in the Immigration dept in Chennai that people have to suffer for no reason, does not matter what race you are.I was mocked by some of my husbands friends, when I was minding my own business.
