EditorsEdit: Arshad Warsi's 'Circuit'ous justice system

I had written about Sanjay Dutt being more equal than other acccused in the eyes of the law. The skewed verdict now seems to be having its repucurssions, with people wondering openly as to the reasons for showing Dutt unwarranted leniency. The All India Muslim Federation chief has issued a statement now questioning as to why Dutt was convicted under the Arms Control Act whereas Zibun Nissa (another Mumbai blasts accused), has been sentenced under TADA, for committing the same crime. But the wider populace and indeed the media seems to be not even prepared to discuss this dochotomy in justice and is instead celebrating the letting off of Dutt on lesser charges, as if he were some angel who's manage to come in from the cold.

Arshad Warsi a.k.a 'Circuit' of Munnabhai fame issued a jubilant statement and advised the investigation and judicial agencies that had they read some of the letters that Dutt has written to his daughter at the start, they would have understood what sort of a large hearted man Dutt is and would never have booked him to start with ! Good suggestion Mr. Warsi. It's not for no reason that your on screen character was named 'Circuit'. If India takes up your suggestion to reform its system, we would soon let off all criminals for being good guys at heart.

Boman Irani of Munnabhai fame, too pitched in with "oh, he is such a nice man" as did many other film industry wallahs. How their heart beats for their own. If only it did the same for other convicts who were involved in similar crimes but were dealt much harsher punishment. I am still to hear the industrywallahs even sqeak of the dastardly Khairlanji killings. But then that does not involve their own on whom they have bet films worth hundreds of crores, does it?
Update (8/12/06): There was a good debate about the role of 'intentions' in punishing crime here.
