Superpower India spends billions on war toys while millions suffer
This blog has consistently advocated the futility of our governments obscene defense spend, as not only indefensible considering the endemic poverty that hundreds of millions of our countrymen are reeling under, but also wholly unnecessary considering the fact that both our neighbours, China and Pakistan, are nuclear capable and hence warfare- whether conventional or nuclear- is just unthinkable. While we suffer from internal strife, suicides of thousands of our farmers, malnutrition(a full 50% of our children suffer from malnutrition), illiteracy and almost a complete lack of public health infrastructure, our Generals, Admirals, Air Marshals and 'strategic experts' think nothing of lobbying for more untold billions being spent on toys on the ground, water and sky.
The recently concluded Bangalore air show was another such disgusting spectacle put up by India trying to show off its imaginary 'superpower' status. Western countries dutifully participated, patted India's back for its rise in the order of nations, while their mouths salivated at the prospect of the biggest air defense order worth 126 fighter planes worth $ 9 billion.
While our politicos and defense personnel partied during the air show, there were some quiet voices though, like Peter Foster of 'The Telegraph' who wondered if this wasn't ever so slightly crazy. Or is it just the two of us ?
