Cadbury chocolates - with worm and salmonella flavours !
Remember the Cadbury controversy in 2003 when worms were found in its chocolates? Sales plummeted 30% in India. Since then the company went on a brand building spree, recruited Amitabh Bacchan as its brand ambassador (Pappu Pass ho gaya!) and by all accounts, things are hunky dory. Cadbury's comeback is even more praiseworthy (from a marketing standpoint), when one thinks of the pasting Pepsi and Coke continue to receive in the market place. For all the hundreds of crores they have sunk in advertising, the smear of the pesticide controversy, just refuses to be wiped away.
But Cadbury has fallen afoul once again. This time in the U.K. Some of their chocolates have been found to contain salmonella and dozens of people fell ill. Of course its not easy to shake of authorities in a country like the U.K and authorities are all over trying to ensure that the company pays for its mistakes. So far this has cost Cadbury 30 million pounds (and counting).
And to think that I had an almost irresistible urge to go out and buy a dark chocolate while watching 'Chocolat', yesterday night! : )
